I brought a jewel cichlid to add to my Malawi African cichlids tank the other day. The person at the LSF told me that jewels and Malawi African cichlids are compatible, is this true?

Im not sure on the Malawi but the Jewels are a riverine fish, in conditions somewhat similar to SA cichlids.

I have a Jewel and he has one heck of a personality. He's a member of the family as much as my cats.

Not true.........

Maybe riverine cichlids such as buffalo heads or maybe even kribs.

But not Malawi

I keep one with peacocks and haps before and he was just to much. Hyper, super aggressive eater, and definitely doesn't fall in the social structure of the malawi setup. In the end I returned mine. Give it a try, but don't be afraid to return him. Best to give them a mix diet of green, flake and etc. Mine would go crazy over most greens and they helps prevent against bloat from over-eating.

Yes they love a varied diet. I feed mine spirulina, bloodworms, flake and Hikari Cichlid complete.

He loves them all, although the spirulina and bloodworms more so.
