Hey all,

This is my first endeavor with an african cichlid so I have some questions.

I have him (or her) in a 20 gallon long by itself. It will be the only fish in the tank. I'm using a Aquaclear 30 (150gph). Will this be adequate for the job?

Temperature. If read anywhere to 77oF to 74oF. What is best considering I keep my power compact light on 8 hrs a day.

Water conditions. I use my LFS water which is de-ionized/ROed. I bought to Kent RO right, I assume this will be good to replace the minerals needed.

Food. Hikari mini pellets.

Any input would be most helpful. I've done salt and South American fish for years but never ventured into African.

Thanks
Kyle

just on the food aspect, dont be afraid to feed them some other varieties other than the pellets. For example, shrimp pellets, spirulina pellets/wafers. Africans need a good balance of both veggies and "meats." HTH

75 gallon: A. Baenschi trio,Cyanotilapia Afra Cobwe(4), copadichromis trewavase, protomelas sp. tangerine tiger(breeding pair)

The jewel cichlid is a coastal riverine species and has more in common with regards to water conditions with SA cichlids than with rift lake cichlids. It should be able to adapt to what ever your local water conditions are like as long as they aren't extreme. A 20 may get a little cramped for an adult jewel but probably no more so than an oscar in a 55.
