I have just finished setting up a 36" by 15" by 18" tank.

I was wondering 3 things:

What are you opinions/experiences with Kribs?

What fish would you mix with them?

Is the tank size suitable?

It is quite well planted and has quite a few 'safe houses' for the fish....

Look forward to hearing your views...!

Oh, id be looking to putting a pair in the tank, maybe not a breeding pair, but definately only 2!

One last thing, what are your experiences with the red tailed black shark? I know it can be aggressive with weaker tank mates etc but just wanted some general feedback.

thanks.

kribs are nice, a pair would be best. with flower pots.

other tankmates: most are good, haven't had a problem with mines.

Kribs are cool fish but if you end up with a breeding pair there can be trouble.

If it was just the kribs a 20 long works great. If you want to mix a breeding pair with other fish you need plenty of room, say a 45 or so. If it's not a breeding pair and you want other fish a 29 would work well.

Kribs mainly hang near the bottom so mid level and top dwellers would work. Just about any temprament would be okay, kribs can hold thier own and if not breeding don't usually bother other fish.

I've got about 8 (leftovers from when I bred them)in a 75 with an Oscar and a firemouth.

Have fun, Mike

Recently, a friend of mine asked me to take his two kribs out of his community tank because they were trying to breed and started getting really aggressive towards the other tank mates.

I put them into my tank and 30 seconds later, my tiger shovelnose ate one of them.

I couldn't help but laugh.

Anyhow, the other guy is still in there hiding behind a rock most of the time.

I think I will try and give him back now.

yeah. if you want a community go for 2 females. my kkrib bred a couple of weeks ago and they are trying to attack the fish in the tank beside them!for an interesting tankmate you could try an africn butterfly. they stay at the surface and should not be bothered.or you could try a small shoal of congo tetras and a synodontis nigriventris to have an african theme tank!butterflies come from africa too so that would be a cool af tank. beware with the african butterfly they will eat small fish so get the tetras large enough. hope thi helps . A few things to remember about Kribs
1) They are African Cichlids
2) They carry all the aggressiveness of larger african cichlids
3) They are aggressive bordering on extremely hostile when breeding

My sister bought a pair of kribs for her tank (same size as yours), because we were both interested in them, and over the period of 3 months they paired up and succeeded in murdering the following fish: Silver Dollar size Angelfish, 8 neons, 2 dwarf flame gouramis, 1 bolivian ram, 2 blue rams, and 3 cory cats !
The male was more aggressive of the two.
If you are choosing kribs, I would suggest trying to mix them with appropriate species also from africa, such as African Butterfly fish, Upside Down Catfish, and possibly other small african cichlids.
I wouldnt mix them with any mild mannered or small fish.

I agree with So_Very_Sneaky I recently brought four of these cretins for my American cichlid set up (I was told although they were African they would be fine) NOT TRUE straight away a male and a female paired up they bite the tail right off the other female then went on to torment the other male who now just hides and I am sure will die eventually. They have also attacked alot of my bigger fish like my severums and earth eaters and my little rams. Now my questions are number 1 will the other female repair its tail? If I was to remove the 2 males would the 2 females then get along and not be aggressive to my other fish? I am seriously thinking of removing the males next time I do a big tank clean before they kill any of my other fish. I have to wait until then as there is so many rocks and caves I would never catch them without emptying the tank.
