Trixie- if you want a planted tank, have a planted tank!
Angels do really well in a planted tank, so do tetras.
All my tetras hover most of the day in a dense thicket of
Hygro plant in one big school. (neons, glowlights, pristellas, rummynose)
Also, some driftwood is good because it provides tannins to soften the water, and places to hide, espescially if you wanted to get a pleco of some type.
Keep a pair of angels that will be fine.
Some plants I have found angels to enjoy are:
Tall Anubias
Giant Val
Spiral Val
Bacopa
They look awesome swimming through the Giant Val leaves. Sometimes it is even difficult to see them, shows how they may use similar type plants for protection in the wild, or roots or the like.

It IS ok to keep plants still. The plants sneaky_pete lsited are quite good for the aquarium, depending on lighting though.

PS: Cups I PMed you, as I don't feel we need argue in this thread anymore.

Why, may I ask, does it need to be planted? A few pieces of vertical driftwood, or even just a few large glass vases standing vertically would be more than enough to make any angelfish feel secure.

Erm...well the tank will be lightly to moderately planted. I was just planning to have a few dense areas of plants for the tetras.

I'd also prefer to keep 2 angelfish, but if 3 works out better, then i'll get 3.

In a 46 gallon, background plants wouldn't come close to interfering with the foreground and swimming space. The foreground would cover the front maybe and the angels would not mind not being able to swim down to the gravel. I can't really find any way a normal set-up would interfere with keeping 3 angelfish. They prefer to swim between plants anyway so who's to say it cuts down on swimming room?

Just my opinion...

Just to clarify. If you have alot of decor that cuts down on open swimming space IMO it's not going to give the angels alot of room to move. I currently have two angels in a 46 gallon planted and I'm now preparing to move them out.

I agree with Pat... I dont see how decor and plants will make a difference. Angelfish like fine leaved plants anyways as they will hide behind them sometimes. 3 angelfish is fine in a 46.

Once you start decorating and putting in schools of fish your just asking for trouble. If you plan on moving the angels before the become full grown that's another story.

Decor would not make the tank any less suitable for 3 angelfish

I say...

3 angels
6 diamond Tetras
and 6 Cory's

That should be fine in a 46 gallon.

IMHO the only way a 46 gallon is fine for 3 angels is if your going with a bare bones tank with nothing else in it. Once you start decorating and putting in schools of fish your just asking for trouble. If you plan on moving the angels before the become full grown that's another story.

Would there be less problems if I had 3 angels instead of 2?

I agree with Cup of Noodles.
A 46g is fine for 3 angels.
You could get 3 with your stocking ideas if you wanted.
I keep my breeding pair in a 25g tall, though they are not full size yet. If they ever seem cramped I will upgrade the tank.
Angels shouldnt be kept alone. I had one alone and she
was so lonely and depressed, it was very obvious. She would go in the corner and stare at the thermometer for hours. Once we added another angel, she was happy, never stared at the thermometer again.

46 gallons should be no problem for up to three angels.

With all of these different opinions, I'm a bit confused :%) I'm most likely gonna get 2 nickel sized angelfish at my lfs. Is this a bad idea? Will one become dominant over the other? Or is it better if I just get one since my tank is only 46 gallons?
