Keeping Angels With Kribs | |
fishfool35 Fingerling Posts: 46 Votes: 1 Registered: 23-Aug-2004 | I currently have a 40 high with a pair of kribs. I was wondering whether anyone has kept kribs with angels. The 40 is a perfect height for angels (24 inches). The tank also has a school of glowlight tetras (7) and 2 Maccullochi rainbows and 3 loaches (2 botia histronica and 1 b. kubatai). Is it possible to keep angels with this current stock list? I would probably buy 3 or 4 juvenile angels and see if any pair up. The tank is relatively heavily planted with Vals and crypts and a piece of driftwood. |

My angels and male krib completely ignored one another, and my male in particular was positively vicious, especially to more normal bodied cichlids. I should point out however that my big angels were around 8 inches tall and the smaller two around 4, and the tank more than double the size. Kribs like caves and angels like tall plants so there should be no competition for nestsites, and they prefer different levels in the water column. The only major chance of competition is when they both go for the meatier foods provided. If your kribs are getting on ok with the other fish in the tank so far, its a good sign theyll probably be ok with angels too, on the proviso of course that your male krib has already reached a decent size and sexual maturity. If he hasnt, you may yet be in for a nasty surprise. Having said that i'm not sure id trust a male krib with a seriously small angel, because small angels are dumb with a capital D, and their intelligence kinda arrives with maturity, so a small angel might not realise its invading a territory and repeatedly get its head beaten in. I'd go for angels that are at least 3 inches tall already. |

Both can be territorial when breeding & i think you're going to have some chasing around. http://www.flickr.com/photos/corydoras/ Member of the Malta Aquarist Society - 1970. http://www.maltaaquarist.com |

It is known that african fish "speak a different language" than south american fish, so often times mixing cichlids from these seperate continents results in confusion, with the krib performing body language that the south american fish cant recognize, resulting in fights. I wouldnt mix them personally. Espescially not with a breeding pair. I have known these fish to be remarkably hostile to other fish, and so probably wouldnt even mix them with any fish at all, but thats just me.
