My Keyholes keep breeding but the very next day...they are gone. They defend them pretty good. Wonder if they are eating the eggs? They lay eggs about every 3 weeks or so.

anythign in the tank with them that might eat the eggs? also it takes parenting fish some time to realise if they eat the eggs they dont grow lol. sometimes if spooked they will eat them in defense. in your case i would chalk it up to bad parents.

While Keyholes will guard their eggs, they're not very good at it. They're just so darn peaceful, I can imagine them with the last little ray of their pectoral fin raised, saying "Would you please choose not to eat our eggs today? Unless you really feel that you must..." I'd recommend keeping other fish out of the tank if possible; if not, then provide more plants and cover, and leave a light on in the room where the tank is located. This will allow them to see nighttime invaders, and may discourage the same from raiding the eggs.

Yes, the downside of those nice peaceful Keyholes. However, if they're relative newcomers to parenthood, give them time. With a bit more experience, they'll be better at it. And, they can raise fry in aquaria with other occupants, but it takes experience on the part of the parents.

However, if you want lots of fry, it's always a good idea to give the parents their very own Passion Flower Hotel™ and leave them to their own devices
