Hey everyone,

My largest female krib just had babies there's about 100 of them right now. I have them in the 20 gallon tank I used for breeding, the male is seperated out now. Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has any species or cichlid-specific advice on taking care of these little guys.

Congrats! I have a pair of kribs but they haven't spawned yet. The parents will take care of them. A way to get the babies food is to crush up some flakes, mix them in water, and shoot it close to the babies. Sometimes the parents will give food to the babies. They will probably attack you a couple of times untill they figure out the babies are getting food. Good Luck

hey good on ya!

i have kept kribs for 7yrs. i have found that the parents will take care of the feeding situation (by chewing up food and spitting it in to the fry) although feeding them on crushed flake is ok. there is alot of "small fry" food on the market but from past experiences i have found this stuff not so good. it promotes bacterial growth and also can clound the water.

the best fry food is baby brine shrimp. hatch them in a soft drink bottle half filled with salty water. then filter out some of the water using a sock, put the sock in the water and the shrimp will swim off and be munched on.

Thanks for the advice. I'll try BBS at some point since i've allready got the eggs for them. Just out of curiosity, what does the survival rate for the average brood look like?

It's tough to tell as I'm sure the adults eat any dead or sick ones. I would say the 3 batches of kribs I had, at least 90% survived.

Have fun, Mike

Congratulations for your fry. Brine Shrimp & crushed Flakes will do fine. Do alot of water changes & keep them in clean water. The fry will grow faster & the survival will be bigger.

just had my biggest batch, about 60. I usually feed bbs live and frozen but have just been turned onto cyclopseze (spelling) by my lfs. they claim that they are a lot better nutrient wise than bbs. we will have to see how it works. it was ten dollars for a brick but they said it will last a long time. i did notice that with frozen bbs there is a lot of water in the packs where the cyclopseze is almost pure food. first feeding with them caught me off guard and i thawed way to much.

With my kribs, I never did do the BBS thing. I did raise alot successfully on crushed flake, and Ocean Nutrition Formula Two frozen cubes. When they get old enough to nibble this (which doesn't take long) they really like it. My tank is heavilyplanted though, with algae, too, and they feed on things on the plants as well. I didn't do water changes that frequently..maybe once a week (small change).. Mine were ok with 4-5 Ottos sharing the tank, and an African Butterfly Fish (as long as the ABF has floating plants to hang out in sometimes). Very cute lil guys.
