Hi

OK, I'm just a little confused now...

Just to be sure, here's a couple of pics of the same fish (excuse the quality, I only have a dodgy web-cam)...

http://www.netcub.net/dex/krib1.jpg

http://www.netcub.net/dex/krib2.jpg

Now, I always presumed I had two males (they're basically identical fin and colour-wise), can I just get someone to confirm this please?

I have seen somewhat contradictory info between various sites and books... This "guy" has a ounced bump on his head, pointed anal/dorsal/tail fins, egg-spots in dorsal and tail... "He" gets a ounced red belly at various times though (especially when "he" was "beating-up" the other Krib, who has the same fin shape/patterning, now it's mainly red 'round feeding time).

I originally bought three _tiny_ Kribs, in the hopes I'd get at least one of each sex (not learning till after that brood gender ratios often ran to one sex)... I lost one soon after purchase, and these two "boys" have grown up happy and healthy. They are now in separate tanks, as the one pictured made the other's life a living hell with harassment 24/7, the abused party living in a patch of plants whilst the dominant one seemed to rule the rest of the tank.

Thanks,
Dex

Judging from the length of the fins I'd say they are males but they look short and I've not seen one with a naudical hump. Are they Pulchers or some other pelvicachromis?

Not sure, Mike

Hi Mike,

The hump isn't HUGE, but is certainly noticeable.

So far as it being a P. pulcher, I was sold it as a "Kribensis" by the LFS, so always just presumed it was.

I haven't had the benefit of seeing any adult Kribs "in the flesh" beyond these two guys... I've looked at pictures of other Pelvicachromis species and none of them even come close. From what I can find either the size, color or shape just don't match...

Thanks again,
Dex

I'd say you're right that they're both males.

That nuchal hump is certainly interesting! My bet is they're Kribs, but that one has some intruiging mutations. Cool little guy.

Yep, they are both males.
Females have round dorsal fin and round anal fin.
And their tail is round too, unlike yours.

Have to agree with others so far. If the other fish looks exactly like the one pictured, then he is also male. Fenale kribs do not have pointed caudal fins (tail).

There are also different types os Pelvicachromis pulcher and one of the types are called "Red" where not only the female but the males as well would have their belly go red with some even have the whole lower part of their body go red. Nice one you have there as I can never see any males that have so much spots on the tail fin.

Thanks tons for all the replies

With this in mind I went out and bought myself a young female, and have her in a separate grow out tank. Will see if I have any luck getting her to pair up with one of the males when she grows up

Thanks again,
Dex
