Ive read that they like their caves and also breed in them. If I set up a cave with a small entrance which apparently they like, will they spawn in here or in a open flowerpot on its side?

Also I heard its best to keep dither fish with them so they can let their anger out on them, than taking it out on each other. Ive heard that Danios are probably the best dithers. Anybody used tiger barbs as dithers before?

Thanks.

FYI - dithers are not for fish to take out aggression on. Dithers are to help coax shy fish out into the open more.

Actually dither fish are also known as target fish. You are both correct on their purposes.

One use is to coax out shy fish.

Another use is to distract agressive fish.

one tiger barb? ya, it would do well I think; they won't mess with kribs, but will harass smaller fish if you don't keep them in a school. Fast as heck, move constantly like they're on crack. Never used one as a target fish, but recently had a problem with one (long story) in my 33, which houses a female krib. For the flower pot I'de actualy carve a hole in it then sand very smooth- thats what I've seen in most krib breeding set-ups. I have an open one in my tank, the krib and rams will go in now and then, but prefer a little cave-ish ornament i have by far.

These are dither fish. The best dither fish are usually smaller schooling species or livebearers.

Another use is to distract agressive fish

These are target fish. I only use target fish with larger, more aggressive species such as Midas, Red Devil, Red terror etc. I have convicts as target fish in my 125 gallon with my pair of Red Terrors. The purpose of adding the cons is to keep the male red terror from being too aggressive with the female.

Using danios for target fish is basically like adding cons to your tank but we are talking about something which is on a smaller scale.

thanks for your replys.

first of all you dont need any dither fish, infact i suggest against it as the kribs are unrelenting in their attacks at times, but mine do fine alone. secondly, my tank has a flower pot and a small pvc tube that is barley big enough for them to swim through. beleive it or not, they spawn in the very small tube constantly and have never done it on the pot, just an idea for your tank.

back to the aggresion thing, my pair chased their tank mates all the time but now that they are alone they get along fine.

I've only had my Kribs a few weeks but they are by themselves and raising a brood. So far no problems. Why not wait and see if you need a target.

Good luck, Mike

IT depends on their personality. I have a Krib pair, that just spawned for the first time (albeit the eggs may not make it but they are learning) in a 20 gal, long, planted tank..with a baby CAE and 2 African Butterfly fish. They ignore the other fish..just keept the CAE away from THEIR rock. They spawned on the side of a rock by the way.. I just added some ottos due to massive algae on some of the plants..will see how THEY do. BUT, these kribs are fine with each other..although some, I've heard, go a bit psycho..
