How long can I put juvie M. auratus(3, 1-1/2inches) with adult L. caeruleus(6, 4-5inches) in a heavily bouldered 44gal corner tank before needing to separate them. I bid on the wrong bag at an auction, but thought I would temporarily keep them together then separate them as the auratus got larger. Any suggestions?

Depends entirely on the fish you have, breeding sessions, etc. just watch them closely and when it becomes a problem, be ready to act...

Thanks! At this point, the labs rule the roost. The melans just hang out and do their own thing.

As Mr. Cichlid said it is entirely up to the fish, if there is plenty of room to "swim and hide" you should be able to get away with it for some time, but you never know...Be ready, and hopefully it will be later than sooner, best of luck heidi

if you have plenty of rock work they may be able to stay that way for good, you just never know, yellow labs may be the least aggresive of the bunch but they are still cichlids and can scrap when needed, though the key would probably be to have more yellow's than melan.
