I was parousing around the LFS the other day and noticed a container being sold as "Malawi Lake Salt". What, if any, are the benefits of such a product or is it just a way to rid me of my hard-earned money?

the malawi lake salts are not salts at all, but water hardeners. mostly carbonates, calcium, magnesium, etc..
if your water that you do water changes with is relatively hard and alkaline at all you do not need to add it. it is mainly for people with very soft water or those that use RO water and need to replenish it. you are right, the cost adds up as it has to be added at every water change.
have you tested your water? if your ph is below 7.4 and gh low, i would consider adding something like that.

No my pH is somewhere between 7.8-8.0, and the water is plenty hard as well. I'm glad I didn't purchase it then. Thanks for the help!
