Hey Everyone,
I noticed some interesting events going on in my 33 gallon today. I've seen pics somewhere before of parrots "mating". Today i saw something much similar in my tank. The two were swimming around the tank together, and when one swam in circles, the other would follow the same path. Eventually, the two came together and were "kissing" for probably 5 minutes and as they were doing it they were going all over the tank - sometimes vertical.
This did not appear to be fighting, can anybody confirm this? If so, is it worth expecting anything over? Thanks.

parrots are hybrids and they are also sterile so the eggs will rot

they could very well go through the motions, but as striped cichlid said the eggs will probably not be fertilized and will rot. the parents will eat the eggs once they start to rot.

there is a very, very slim chance the eggs could be fertilized but I highly doubt it. something like 95% or more of male blood parrots are sterile. female blood parrots can, however, lay viable eggs but it would take a male of another type of cichlid (midas or red devil for example) to fertilize the eggs.

Nah, it would probably just create an even more hybridized fish. I don't know for sure which fish species were used to create the blood parrot, but I'm sure they were closely related. Otherwise, they wouldn't have been able create viable eggs. If another cichlid was able to mate with a blood parrot and produce non-sterile eggs, it makes sense that it would be one of the cichlids that went into creating the parrots in the first place.

As they've said, there would be a VERY small chance that offspring would be produced. Jellybean parrots (the small grayish colored parrotfish) are the result of a second tier of mating between parrots and another closely related species such as Red Devils...

PM/email/msg me if you have any questions/comments regarding me or my knowledge or if you want me to read a thread.

blood parrots are most widely accepted to be the cross of a red devil/midas and a severum. these 2 species aren't really very closely related. jellybean parrots are the cross of a blood parrot and a pink convict. these were created for many reasons but 1 reason was to improve the fertility of males.

also, many people who want to breed blood parrots breed a female parrot to a male devil/midas because a devil/midas was one of the parent species. I believe this is also how king kong parrots were created, by crossing a parrot back to a midas.

parrots shaped like a heart have probably had the tails cut off as juveniles. in time, the wound heals but the tail doesn't grow back leaving the fish with a "heart-like" shape.

I figure at first it was probably due to a deformity, but the breeders saw how well they sold and started hacking off tails shortly after birth because the deformity doesn't show up often. this is just a theory though.

Jellybean parrots do have a much better fertility rate than regular or blood parrots, but the majority of males are still sterile. But if you are lucky enough to find a fertile male be careful because you will soon be overrun with fry. Out of the last 8 batches of eggs I have had 7 successful broods with between 100-150 fry per brood.
