Ok well, I really like your stocking suggestion katieb, so I think I'll stick with that. Do you think it will be a problem if the pH of my water is 8.0?

Balas get over a foot, are very active, and are social. They would get stunted too easily in a 20 long and need over 100 gallons when fully grown. Not a good idea.

You could also look into bala sharks. Smaller ones will fare well in the longer tank.

Yup, i think you could do this, just make sure to keep up with water changes.

6 dwarf rainbows
6 peppered cories
3 male platies
1 small fish (dwarf gourami, spike-tailed pardise gourami, honey gouramie, etc)

I'll do graffiti,
If you sing to me in French.

Id add another peppered cory. For cories the more you have the better. If you went with a smaller species, like pandas, you could have 8. However the smaller species tand to be more sensitive to water quality.

With your current stocklist you may be able to add a small fish like a dwarf gourami. Remember you will also need room for the platy fry, if you have a female.

Alright, I made my list more specific this time:

-6 dwarf neon rainbowfish
-5 peppered cories
-3 sunset platies

So is this all I can have?

I think with the neons, platies, and cories youd be stocked. In fact, id consider going with a platy trio instead of 5 or 6.

Actually I think I'll stick with the dwarf neons. I keep on changing my mind :%) Sorry bout that. Anyways, after some thoughtful thinking, I came up with this stocking plan:
-6 dwarf neon rainbowfish
-4-5 panda or peppered or bronze cories (not sure yet)
-4-5 platies
-and I would like ONE CENTERPIECE FISH--any suggestions?

Congo tetras grow quite larger (3-4 inches)
So you could have 6 congos,
and then perhaps go for a bottom feeder rather than
rainbows. There is not enough room for both.
Say maybe 6 congo tetras
6 Corydoras Something
or 6 loaches (not clowns or modestas or skunks)
or 3 Upside Down Catfish
:-D

Well today I visited lps and the congo tetras and australian rainbows caught my eye. Even though I said I didn't want tetras, I might want congos now Will congo tetras work in replacement of the dwarf neons? What about australian rainbows?

Well, there is an ongoing debate on Ph. Some say that soft water fish need to be in soft water, same with hard water fish...others say Ph doesnt matter as long as their is stability and that if they are moving from one Ph to another they can be acclimated. Personally I think if you get them from your LFS and they are healthy, PH shouldnt be a concern.

I wouldnt do it, they get about 5 inches and like to be in a group. Id say at least a 55gal for them.

Look into threadfins and redtail rainbows.

For 20 long balloon mollies will love that.

try:
6 - balloon mollies in variety of colors (ie. golden, gold dust, albino, red, creamycicle, dalmatian, silver, black, marble, green) they can breed in any colors and they are prolific. (max. 2 inches in size)
2 - albino BN's (max. 4 inches in size)
2 - oto's (max. 2 inch in size)

Yes please help me out Nothing's in the tank lol. I already have a currently cycling 10 gallon which WILL house either a betta/dwarf gourami, 3 albino cories, and 6 neon tetras. Therefore, I think it would be nice to try something different from tetras for my 20 gallon. I was thinking of doing a rainbow tank or something...Any suggestions? What would YOU do?
