there are very few, if any, fish that could stand up to a Fahaka or Arrowhead puffer. I'd say the fahaka is worse only because it grows to ~18" whereas the arrowhead only grows to ~6".

However, seeing as this is in Cichlid Central, it's really hard to say what is the meanest. This usually depends on the personality of the individual fish, but I'd have to say top dog would probably be the Wolf Cichlid--P. dovii.

Jack dempseys are wimps compared to most guapotes and other more highly aggressive species such as:

N. haitiensis (Black Nasty)
N. beani (Green Guapote)
N. tetracanthus (Cuban Cichlid)
P. dovii (Wolf Cichlid)
P. managuense (Jaguar)
P. motaguense (Red Tiger)
C. umbriferum (Blue Freckled Monster)
A. festae (Red Terror)
A. zaliosum (3rd species of the "Red Devil Complex"
A. citrinellum (Midas)
A. labiatum (Red Devil)
A. trimaculatum (Trimac or 3-Spot Cichlid)
V. argentea (Argentean Cichlid--I've read recently that these and some other Vieja species can be down right nasty)

green terrors would fall into the same, medium-level aggression as jack dempseys, texas and such.

every species will have variations in temperament. you'll have rather passive red devils and extraordinarily aggressive firemouths, but each species has an "average aggression level".

I say overall king is either the umbee or dovii.

If we are talking about an fich in the entire world which is tropical fish, I must go with the Snakehead. Thhere is one nasty and ugly fish. It's jaws, appetite, and it's ability to move across land make it truly a nasty fish.

a snakehead is no match for a fahaka puffer. the only advantage the snakehead would have is the ability to jump out of the water and retreat. the fahaka's teeth would destroy any freshwater fish. fahaka's (as well as most other puffers) can bite a crayfish in half with ease. my arrowheads eat whole crayfish in 10 seconds or less. mbu puffers actually get about a foot longer than fahaka's, but I believe usually the fahakas are much more aggressive. it is very uncommon to be able to keep anything with a fahaka puffer...even in the largest of tanks.

just found this finding pics of the puffer's teeth can be difficult, but click on that link and look at the 3rd pic down and you'll get an idea of what a puffer's teeth look like. keep in mind, these are fused into their jaws and have the power to bit a fiddler crab in half with ease. they don't rip other fish apart like pirhanas and barracudas...they bite fish in half.

The most bad fish in fresh water would have to be the Electric Catfish. A fish that can grow to 1m long and generate a 400 volt puntch. One fish not to be messed with fahakas are nothen compared to this bad boy.

Fahaka puffer please Id say the most aggressive is the Affrican Pike Charcin would rip it to shreds.even a red tail cat fish cant stand up to its power. The most aggressive cichlid however i believe is the flowerhorn or JD

FRESHWATER BARRACUDA IS THE NASTIES IT WOULD RIP THAT FAHAKA PUFFER APART BEFORE IT EVEN GOT A SHOT AT IT

in which case the barracuda would be dead...tetraodotoxin in the puffer's flesh incidentally, an arrowhead would start taking chunks out of the barracuda before the 'cuda knew the puff was around.

have you ever seen the teeth of these puffers?

incidentally, we're talking about "meanest/most aggressive fish". I will admit I know next to nothing about fw barracudas, but I know most people mistake pirhana's for being evil, mean fish. they're not...they're just hungry. a school of pirhana's will kill anything if they are hungry, but if they're not chances are they'll leave other fish alone.

now, here is a story of an arrowhead puffer originally told by Pufferpunk--she is a member of this site. She went to an lfs to buy an arrowhead puffer. there were 2 at the lfs, and both were in separate bags floating in the same tank. one of the arrowheads ate through the bag it was in, then ate through the other bag simply to kill the other puffer.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but these puffers aren't very common, and I can tell you it's difficult to understand what they are capable of without seeing them first hand. I have, however, seen fw barracudas, exodons and pirhanas and I would say an arrowhead could take them out no problem.

just my $0.02

I gotta say it depends on the individual fish and not the species (obviously some species are more aggressive than others).
But I have one red devil that is psychotic - the fish has been insane since he was very small. I had him when he was a baby with an oscar that was more than 2x its size - I put them in the tank hoping that the oscar will not eat this little guy - 20 min later I come to find the Oscar pecked to death.
This fish also bites me on a regular basis. If I open the lid to the tank, I have to make sure the fish is in a net - because it will jump out of the aquarium to bite me.

most pirhanas aren't mean...they're just hungry. many people mistake red bellied pirhanas as being highly aggressive fish when they're actually not. I've seen huge display tanks at a public aquarium with pirhanas, oscars, catfish and such. the pirhanas school by themselves and don't bother the rest of the fish.

I have seen a couple of pics of fahakas buried, but I don't think the behavior is as common in fahakas as it is in arrowheads and congos. I definitely don't think they have the ability to change colors as drastically as arrowheads and especially congos, but I could be wrong.

I've had many people come to look at my tanks, and when we get to the arrowhead tanks I usually have to point out the puffer or put food in the tank...otherwise they can be very difficult to see.
