We are re-doing our kitchen, big project. We have someone coming in to do this project the mid/end of December. Jokingly I suggested opening up a window between our dining area and our living room and putting in a 180 gallon tank with cichlids. It was a joke but my wife has gone for it and loves the idea. The contractor is going to make the stand in the wall to match all of our cabinets, it should look beautiful.
I now need to make plans for this. I have two cichlids in mind that I would like to build this around and I'm looking for suggestions. Both are from different lakes so I know I can't do both. I want this to be a community with lot's of color. My first choise is the Yellow Lab, Labidochromis Caeruleus. The second are the Brichardis. I am not set on 100% cichlids so if there are other fish I can incorperate into this set up, eg. rainbows, small plecos, or others I welcome suggestions.
This is exciting!

For a community tank of colour short of salties, cichlids are definitley a great way to go.Having just started a malawi tank i can say it is very colourful and will just get better as they grow into there full colours.Alos having a tank that size puts hardly any thing out of your scope.
For a great looking feature tank look at this link to Dolfs tank .

I'll say it's exciting!

With a 180 gallon, your choices are almost limitless. Definitely, for colour you can't go past malawians. Your tank would suit either an mbuna set-up or a peacock/hap set-up (electric yellows, although mbuna, can actually go in both). But a Tanganyikan set-up would also be amazing. A lot depends on what is available to you - do you know of cichlid breeders in your area? Any aquarium societies where you might find breeders? If not, just trawl around the LFS's and see what they have. You could also just go through the profiles on this site and at http://www.cichlid-forum.com/photogallery and see exactly which fish appeal to you the most, and base your decision on which set-up the majority of those fish would fit into.

[font color="#000080"]Throw in lots of electric yellows, some peacocks and a few electric blues. That would look great with all the colour and everything.
It sounds like a cool idea.
