I have a pair of convicts that recently spawned in a 40 gallon tank. I carefully moved the clay pot with the fry into a 20 gallon high tank so the other fish would not eat them. When I put the convict parents into the tank, the male immediately went and guarded the fry. The problem is that the male has been trying to kill the female since I put them in the 20 gallon tank. She just hides in a corner. What should I do, I don't want the male to kill her but I still want them to be together.

Why would you want them to be together?
I would just let the male be with the fry and put the female back in the original tank so she doesn't get too harassed by the male.
The parents don't even need to be with the eggs/fry since you have the eggs in a seperate tank alone..

I guess that would be ok, but will I be able to put the female back in that 20 gallon later on when the fry are removed?

The stress of moving them will have upset one or both of them and wasn't the best thing since you just removed their offspring too. I'd agree with the 'not needing either' in with the fry or remove the female certainly. You'll be replacing the male into the 40 soon anyway.

I think adding another male might help, but I don't really have the room to keep another convict.

That won't be such a good idea!!! There's simply not enough room.

But you can try to put in some fast swimming fish, such as tiger barbs etc.

Good luck!!!

You'll be amazed, the books arent always right.

Edit: smnst, you put the new male in for the pair to establish back, after they get along for a while, you'll return it.
