the mouth is not right to be a Jag it could be a yellow acara(Aequidens metae):%)

The difference between 'involvement' and 'commitment' is like an bacon and egg breakfast: the chicken was 'involved' - the pig was 'committed'."

I'm going to say it's a Gold form Parachromis motaguense. there is also a Red Tiger morph of this species which is not as common.

With only a few weeks gone by, and many power feedings later, he's almost doubled in size.

Yeah, I'll have to agree and say its a Mota.

after a meal

what you lookin at!

happy-happy, joy-joy

I decided to take down the incomplete divider to see what would happen. It didn't please the loisellei at all. Here's a few photos taken before I put the divider back up.
loisellei on left, motaguense on right.

action 3
action 4
mota backs down

I just inherited an 85 gallon, so I'll be moving these two to their new home in a few weeks once I buy, find, or build a new stand.

awesome pics...both the loisellei and mota look great.

I wouldn't expect to be able to keep both of them in the 85 gallon together. For one, different species of Parachromis usually don't mix well at all. Plus, loisellei are much more laid back than motaguense. granted for now the mota is backing off, but once it puts some size on I'd expect the tide to turn.

Thanks.

I agree. I had to put the divider back up. The lois was becoming relentless in her pursuit of the mota. I noticed the mota has visible fangs so I don't doubt the agression it would unleash once it outgrows the lois. And that time would come soon. This mota has the appetite of three Oscars combined! Seems like he's always hungry.

One prominent difference of the two species is their body shape. The motagense has a more slender shape like that of the dovi or managuense, while the loisellei has a unique "football" shape, taller in height.

The regular LFS I go to has 2" loisellei in stock again.
I'll probably trade in the mota for a few.

sounds like a good plan. that would be awesome if you could get a mate for your loisellei and breed them.

Yep, that's what I've been hoping for.

The thing that makes me laugh is the loisellei at the LFS are still being labeled as Freddy's... as I have yet to see a real P. friedrichsthali in person. Although, I ain't complaining.
