I'm looking for a small but colorful Tanganyikan cichlid for the mid regions of my 30-gallon. Anybody have any experience with Neolamprologus longior (elongated lemon cichlid)? They're supposedly like N. Leleupi, but more peaceful.

I wouldn't trust them to be that much more peaceful, though much harder to find. What else is in the tank? If you don't have shellies in there, they'd probably be a great addition.

Nothing else is in there yet. I'm using it as a quarantine tank for the next month, then planning to convert it to a Tanganyikan tank.

I want to stock one of the smaller catfish species plus something colorful (like leleupi or longior), but it's only a 30-gallon tank, so I can't choose one of the larger Tangs.

There's disagreement as to how large a tank leleupis need -- Ad Konigs recommends one that's at least 4 feet long, and a 30-gallon is only 3 feet long. But other people have told me they've kept them in smaller tanks.

Opinions?

I keep leleupi in a 20 long and while I'm prepared to upgrade them if it becomes necessary, I don't see that as a likely requirement. 20 is a very, very common size for leleupi species tanks; a 30 with only some catfish is, in my opinion, a wonderful tank for longior (or leleupi).

Excellent! That was what I was hoping. And I'll certainly provide plenty of hiding spaces.

I've got some Neolamprologus brichardi & they are very tolerant with the 2 Yoyo Loaches. I've also breeded the Brichardi & there are also some fry. Quite nice, but not very colourful as you wanted.
