So my Badis died this week

But, everything else is fine in the tank so I decided to go out and get a couple centerpiece fish! I went out looking for one of a few things: Apistos, Nannacara anomala, or pygmy gouramis. The latter two are fish I've wanted to keep for a long time. Apistos are a long-time favorite. Well, I went to the LFS and the only thing that fit the bill were Apisto borellii. They had three, but I think it was a female and two males. As far as I can tell, I got a female and a young male, but it could be two females or something. If so I guess I'll be looking for a male. We'll see as they mature and color up.

Adult female(?) on left, juvenile male (?) on right

I just sold 50 anomala fry last week. One of my fav fish. And one of the few that I continuously breed. For being such an "available" fish, you do rarely see them in the stores. *sarcasm* Were do live Superlion? Are'nt you in Indiana?

Not in Indiana anymore. Now I'm back in California with my parents (graduated from college).

They were only $7.99 each, which, around here at least, is a pretty reasonable price for dwarf cichlids. Although if I still lived in Indiana, I suspect I could have gotten anomalas from Acid for less. They seem to be pretty healthy too, even if the smaller one is a bit thin (he ate this morning though). At the LFS, the bigger one (that I suspect is a female) was hiding under a rock most of the time, looked fairly pale under there. She came out and darkened up a bit, but was the most alert fish in the tank about the guy with the net. And fast! So I think the hiding and paleness wasn't health-related.

They're doing pretty well. I'm pretty sure I have a pair (hooray!) now, having seen the smaller one extend his dorsal fin all the way, it's comparatively about twice as long (proportionally) than the bigger fish's. Plus he's showing more blue coloration. The big one is already acting like she owns the place (10 gallon tank with 3 cherry barbs and an otto), the male usually keeps his fins clamped down. I don't see anything physically wrong with him, so I think it's just fear and poor condition from being in the shop tank for a while. His fins are a little torn like he got beat up on in there. I think once he calms down and gets fattened up he'll do great. And he's eating really well so I don't think it'll be long.

The female does occasionally nip at him...

San Francisco Bay Area. But you probably wouldn't go to this shop because the only apisto they had were the ones I got and one other borelli. I think my other LFS might have some other apisto or two, but I haven't been there in a while.

I think the male will have to get a bit bigger before they'll breed. She kind of picks on him now...
