I know I am a little overstocked here, but the idea is to get a bigger tank for my clowns in the 79 gal, and move these fish into it sometime in the future.

Right now, I have the following juveniles, and I have tried to keep similar sized aggressive fish. Please tell me how long I can keep them in a 33 gallon tank:

4 Jewel Cichlids (after I have a pair, I might give away 2 if I can bring myself to part with them)
2 Black Convicts (both females I presume, coz they have the orange scales on their bodies)
2 Salvinis

Is this is a good combination and should I get a bottom feeder or some sort, or leave it as is. How grossly am I overstocked, and how soon will I need to move these out?

keep an eye on the jewels i think due to the tank size they might start to fight with each other and then pick on the other fish or vice versa.

jewels tend to be kept alone because of how agressive they are! i put a small 1 with a larger oscar and had to remove it due to my oscar trying to eat it. so i suppose the bigger fish will be more domanent. but again i do think you may have problems!

dont jewels have lovley colours tho!

Absolutely, I was supposed to only go window shopping and came back with 4 jewels. This tank was stocked with one angel, kuhlies and some other fish, guess wat, all the fish had to go

My original plan was to keep the breeding pair when it forms and return two, but I dont kno how I am going to part with them.

I am hoping I get lots of moolah so I can get a new tank for the clowns, and the Jewels can go into the 79 gal.

Oh, and I got me one more convict - a male for the two nasty girls.

They are picking at him right now

Just be forewarned there's going to be a lot of agression in that tank when they start spawning. Once the convicts pair up that other female might be in trouble as well.

Are your salvinis M/F?

I dont kno about the salvinis yet. Yes, I do have a spare tiny tank for the babies and a big 60 litre bucket, spare pumps, filters etc.

My house is full of fish

Been married over a year, and we havent bought a sofa yet

That tank is just a disaster waiting to happen. Red Jewel require different water requirements than the cons and Salvini. Salvini are ambush predators. They may seem shy, but that is only because they are waiting to attack. Once they attack, the fish won't know what hit them. Those fish also require a larger tank than a 33G. My suggestion would be to take back the jewels and salvini and keep the convicts. Convicts are fun to watch, espcially when they have babies. Their parental behavior is awesome and definately a nice fish to have.

Actually they have similar water requirements, many people keep jewels successfully in mixed/community-type tanks.

I believe she said they are currently in a 33g but would eventually be in a larger tank

Yes,they can be kept in those water parameters, but should they? Larger tank or not, I'm afraid the salvini will attack.. Just trying to help :-(

My red jewel is busy disciplining the salvini at the moment. I think I may have too many fish in there, so I have some sort of a plan:

1 pair of convicts (will give away the female that isnt paired up)

1 pair of jewels (will give away two jewels to a friend who has been begging for them anyway, another good cichlid tank awaits them)

1 salvini ( one of the two salvinis is very beautiful. He's optional, but I wld like to keep him if he behaves. The biggest of the jewels - King Jewel as I call him, is keeping him in line ATM)

Is this a good plan for downsizing? I have 5 pots in the tank and a driftwood with an amazon tat divides the tank into territories. Oddly, none of the fish have formed territories yet, except for the big salvini who likes to hide under the filter

And yup, there is a bigger tank awaiting them.

P. S. One male convict got added along the way I swear, I didnt do anything. I dont kno where he came from

That pair of cons or maybe the pair of jewels are going to rip everybody up. You were going ok before you added the male con. Do you have a place for the baby cons.

Yes, I have a spare tank and a spare bucket for the baby cons. The spare tank is 10-15 gallons, have to check... so if they get too aggressive, I can move them out.
