I was at a local pet store and I saw a strange oscar color. They called them blueberry oscars and they were a bright blue and white. Just wondering if anyone has seen these??

Yeah, you see them once in a while. They are dyed. It's a shame. They can be such interesting fish without having to traumatize and torture them.

One method of dying fish, is to put the fish in a bath that removes their protective slime coat. Then they are dumped into the dye. It usually shortens the lives of the fish that do servive the dying. Or fish can be tattooed. It is the equilivent of you being tattooed with a needle the size of a pencil without pain killers. Unfortuanetly it is usually the inexperienced fishkeepers that purchase them. Plus the dye job usually fades over time.

How do they dye them.

The same way they do with the "Mixed Fruit" Tetras... They have to first strip them of their slime coats, soak them in dye, and then put them in a skin irritant to make them regrow their slime coats.

All of the steps in this process are dangerous and painful to the fish.

The dye will be naturally removed by the fishes' body and the it will appear normal within a year.

When I first got my tank I bought a Painted tetra without knowing what it was. If I had known better I wouldn't have purchased it. At the time it was a bright pink colour. That was about a year and a half ago. The colour has since faded and it now almost pure white. It's a white skirt tetra I believe and is one of the most active fish in my tank.

I think it is hard for beginners to tell what fish are "real" in terms of colouration. i see really beautiful fish in one shop and when i ask they say the fish are bred like it, but i am sure they are dyed.

i have a question about parrot fish, how are they created? my favourite LFS has a display tank of them and whilst i have no room what so ever in any tank any where i just wondered if they were an ok fish to buy? i have read that they are mutated fish or that they are also dyed but i can't believe that this LFS would sell dyed fish (the first one definitely would tho)

one day i might "do" a parrot fish tank if you guys say it is ok!

(another planned tank to add to the list)

Parrot fish are hybrids between (I believe) Severums and Midas cichlids (or is it red devils?). Many aquarists do not like hybrid fish, especially among cichlids. Also, many Parrot fish you'll se will be dyed fluorescent colors.

My store will not stock Parrot fish because we do not like hybrids.
