I like your choices

Is a 55g going to be large enough for them when full grown though?

I agree that once they get full grown your tank will be overstocked.

I would also be wary of keeping the Jacks with any other fish. I've heard they are very aggressive.

No it wont. I have discussed this with him in chat but he had already pre-paid for the fish and is apparently unable to trade them back in.

Clapton, if you can save up for another 55 within the next 6 months, you may be ok. But as I told you in chat, they won't get along for too much longer than that.

Dempseys are going to get huge you might need another 55 or 70 gallon tank to house them.

my jacks that are in my 55usg are about 6" and they only show aggression when other fish swim at them. otherwise they just stay occupide with each other. btw there are two black skirt tetras in the tank with them and some gouramis.

maybe i just have some less aggressive males

but your list will work untill you get a larger tank

a jack dempsey is less agressive when it has caves to hide in. But yes they do get rather large and can be nasty when they want to. This is from my experience.

Not quite. Salvins only get to about 6". I have seen Jack at 9-10".

As far as temperment, Jacks are okay as long as they don't breed. My roommate in collge had some in a 75 gallon. Two decided to start a family and together they rapidly killed off every other occupant of the tank including the other Jacks! It was a slaughter!

well i think if you got rid of one convict one JD and one fire mouth it will work. and i dont think it can do any harm over stocking while there young so as no one specific fish is attacked consistantly. i also think you might fing that the salvini will be the dominant fish in this tank. i call them the pocket battle ship they are the best cichlid in my mind. i have 2 females and 1 male and the females are more aggressive than the male. i would compare their aggression levels to much larger fish such as jags , freddys , cubans , beanii and devils brillian fish indeed. as for JDs they are over rated aggression wise but do hold their on well aggainst much larger fish.
