Has anyone ever had this happen? These two fish have been friends for over a year and just recently they've gotten territorial around their terracotta pot. Tonight we've found their pot littered with about 300 eggs and the brazil is guarding them, the nic is also chasing away any fish that comes near.
Pic of our nicaraguense...

Pic I took tonight, sorry about the quality...

I really don't know what's going to happen, whether the eggs are fertilised? They're both certainly acting like they're protecting future babies

They are closley related so the eggs could be very well fertile. Do you have just those 2 in a tank or do you have several of each species? If you have several of each species I would say it is very strange that they would choose each other but if those are the only 2 then it is not so wierd.

They're the only ones, the other tankmates are different types of cichlids. It was suprising because although they always hung together we never really thought of the two of them breeding. I have heard of the Braziliensis and the Synspilum breeding and we have one of those in the same tank but that's a female and so is the Brazil (obviously)
The eggs are still there this morning, I'll post anything new that happens.
Thanks for the reply Reiner
