OK TO HAVE 6 Oscars IN A 40gallon???? | |
charlesfarinas Small Fry Posts: 1 Kudos: 1 Votes: 0 Registered: 01-Jul-2006 | I have 6 malaysian blood red oscars in my 40 gallon tank and i was wondering if anyone could give me a little advice if this is an okay move or should i get another aquarium? the oscars are all 4 inches. Thanks! |

Dangerous Dave Hobbyist Posts: 144 Kudos: 179 Votes: 3 Registered: 15-Jul-2002 | Too many fish I am afraid. A full grown oscar on its' own requires around 70+ gallons from memory. Oscars are particularly messy fish and so require bigger tanks than a lot of other fish. You are looking at a much bigger tank to house these fish. If I were you, I would take them back and swap for something smaller. |

bettachris Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3875 Kudos: 4173 Votes: 452 Registered: 13-Jun-2004 | certainly over stocked and like stated a full grown oscar will need around 75 gallons, i believe aggression depends on the personality of each oscar so they may aggressive to one another as their are so many oscars in a small tank. in the past month i did see around 12, 10'' oscars in a 50 gallon, however this was a holding tank and i didn't see any aggression. but like stated it would be the only opition of getting more 75 gallons, and maybe add 2-3 oscars in each tank. |

And I'm wondering how you got 'malaysian' oscars... they're american cichlids--most commonly found in the southwest USA to somewhere in mexico, if I remember correctly. Not in Malaysia... that's halway across the world Did the person that sold them to you tell you that? |

bettachris Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3875 Kudos: 4173 Votes: 452 Registered: 13-Jun-2004 | they are from S.A, but i am 100 % sure that these fishes came from the east fish farms so when lfs get them, they will often change the names of the fish, but i dont believe any more oscars are taken out of the wild anymore, without a special request, most come from the east. |
