OK folks. I've aquired the tanks and have the 75 running now. I'm gonna "try to breed" my Synodontis Multipunctatus and am asking you folks what "mouthbrooding" cichlid to use? The only 1 I am thing about is "NGARA"(peacock). But I am open to suggestions. Keep in mind tank is only 75gal with 2-40gal "growouts" and will house 6-8 Syno Multi's. My cats have never bred, so I guess I'm starting new. So let me Know what cichlids you folks like and maybe I'll go from there. BTW I WILL only keep 1M to a 10-12F ratio as my cats will prolly interupt breeding(I hope in the good way). Haps,Peacocks,Mbuna,Tangs. What do you folks think? Thanks folk and wish me luck.

seeing your out to breed the cats and not the cichlids themselves i would suggest yellow labs. mostly because they breed the most and are very easy. their temperment is very mild compared to most the other rift lake cichlids so it makes stocking them alot easier.

being a 75g i would plop a school of yellow tailed Acei in there also. these hyper cichlids seem to draw the labs out of hiding like moths to a light bulb. makes them feel very secure so this may help with spawning more often and less likely to stop after being interupted. this is just in theory i havent actually attempted this. ( the breeding more often not the aceis...ive seen them work great )

would only need 5-6 acei that would be enough movement to bring the labs out.

i forget what m/f ratio you had in mind but i think you said just one male. im not entirly sure but i would look into this more and check the breeding habits of yellow labs. i think multiple males may spread the agression more and cause more breeding. the females cant be constently being chased to breed they will become very tired and stressed. other males might give the males something more to think about so holding females can hide.

anyway thats 2 cents. wish you the best of luck with what ever you decide. keep us informed im curious how well it works out.

btw i actually have a video from off th enet of these cats breeding so you can see how they sneak in and out faster then you think. let me know and ill send

i agree on the yellow labs. they are not as aggresive as others and they breed out in the open more as well. the only problem is that you must buy adults. i bought mine at 1-2 inches and it took 6 months before they started breedig. unfortunatlly for you, yellow labs are popular and in my lfs adults go for about $25 a peice and even $7 for the young ones. if money is a problem either order them online, mabey from aquabid, or choose a less expensive fish, or you could drive to Md and buy mine, 2m 3f. good luck

OK. I see where you are coming from. I have friends that breed EL's and is very easy. I also do have 1M that I've had for over 1.5 years. I think a LFS has some adults also prolly around $9. I'll check them out today. So what do you think 2M/6-8F. I was not planning on many caves so you think the Acies are needed. As I can get some, but are juvies(1.5". Only thing is EL's are very common round here, so they may be a problem to get rid of. Again tank will only have 2 large pieces of slate leaning on some PVC. Sand substrate and pretty much wide open(a local breeders tank is set up that way). He has had luck with his Multipunctatus with Haps and Peacocks(1M/20F). But I guess those would be more $$$$.

Not a bad idea CupofLife. I've owned him for well over a year and I don't think hes grown at all. I have seen larger available, so maybe after I give the Synos a chance. Well anyhow I just picked up 3F EL's and trying to get 3/4 more from a friend. I will be tearing apart the 125 this weekend to get out my cats and my M/ EL. What do you crazy kids think about throwing in a breeding trio of Ngaras also? Cant sell the EL offspring to my LFS,so if not at auctions they may become my new feeders for my Bichirs. But I can sell Ngaras and Multis sooo. Keep the Ideas coming as I'm off till the 18th and would like to have the stock wrapped up. BTW I'm only planning on running 1 40 for now(other is cleaned and ready to go if needed=thank God for my overfiltering practices). Fish ready tanks in 48Hrs.
