Hi all.. Brand new to the site, but I've been in the hobby for over 30 years. My question or comment is I currently have a Tilapia buttikoferi that I've had since 1988 making him +-17 years old now. Anyone else with a fish that old or have you had them that old? He/she is rather large at approximately 16" and I would estimate around 4 pounds. He is really aggressive and has even been known to bite the hand that feeds him if given the opportunity. As such he is the sole occupant of a 75g.

Hey oldtimer, welcome to fishprofiles.

Tilapia buttikoferi are really nice fish, and are known to be one of the most aggresive cichlids. Very cool in my opinion.

P.s. that fish is also older than me

Hey Old Timer - welcome to Fishprofiles.com.

No pun intended here, but we really needed an Old Timer with 30 years of experience. You see, we just lost one. One of our long time members, Gary Roland, passed away after a massive stroke and the site is missing him

I don't know much about cichlids, but just wanted to say welcome aboard. .

Got pics?

Diane

I would also dearly love to see a pic of this fish, and very well done for keeping your fish that long

Congrats on keeping a fish alive that long.

Welcome to the site.

We can get a little crazy but it's fun!

Thanks for the welcome and I have thought of putting him in a larger tank, but he has now lived in this "home" for the past 16 years and seems perfectly content and has done well... so at his age why upset him. Also I don't have any photos of him, but I will take some and post in the near future.

Hi Old Timer,

I've never own one, but I've heard and read many-a-time how aggressive Butterkofs can be.

Awesome accomplishment. Welcome aboard.

One question I had: What is your routine for water changes for this 75 gallon?

Weekly water changes at 25-30%.
