OMG guys... today i came home..after trying to see if my jacks were mating....when for all i knew they already had. I came home after school and found hundreds of tiny little jacks everywhere...and the two proud parents guarding them. I still have the other 4 jacks in there. so tonight i'll have to take the parents out, then take the other 4 out not to get them mixed up.....then put them in and bring the 4 to a LFS... I'm so excited!1

How long can the fry live in this aquarium with the parents still being approx. 2" long???

i think it should be fine, when i moved my fry/convict parents they were fine when i added them into my tank, justm ove quick as with the parents gone, the fry are easy targets for the others.

I called the LFS.. and the guy said in a kinda mean way "had you come here we could have given you a pair".. but hey.... now i can say that i successfully paired Jack Dempsey's lol. So they're going to take the other 4 that I can't have...and he said that they'll take the fry once they've reached an inch and a quarter..... my question..... how long can they stay in the 60 with the parents until i have to take them out...???
thanx for any advice!!!

as far as i've been told on here and a little research myself.. jack dempsey's will grow to about 10"... male and 8" female... oh and Jack Dempsey's aren't considered community fish. They're named after a 1919 (or so) boxer who used to defeit his opponents to near death, being a smaller man himself.....so u kinda get the picture of what demperament they have lol. i'm just now into cichlids and the "wet pet" version of fish keeping.

I have bread guppies before also.
I just didn't realize the jacks would have fry so young.... and i couldn't find their dug out bc it was behind a piece of driftwood. I posted pictures of my aquarium in the photobooth....but I JUST changed the rock layout because I took everything out to get the other 4 jack's out.

Very cool you have a breeding pair and something to do with the fry. I wish you the best of luck.

dont leave out the possability of selling the young. especielly if the parent are fairly nice looking. i would also request some store credit where you give them to. will pay for food and other things you may need in the future like a new tank muhahah.

thanx everyone..

i was just wondering....for these fry.. do I feed them the little powdered staple food I had for the guppy fry.... or do they solely live on what the parents spit around them? I'm new to these fry....and i know i might sound like a complete idiot but I don't want to lose all of them lol..

thanx in advance..

I think they are fairly nice looking hehe. I haven't attempted to sex them yet..so i'll be doing that when i go back downtairs. I have noticed that one of them has chunks of his fins missing, since i've gotten it.. from being in such a small tank at the lfs. I have also noticed they both have red lining on the dorsal fin. They are both dark black (one going to a lighter color from time to time...) and one of them is showing some blue specs, the one who happens to be the lightest and the least around the fry. I'm looking at the fins and i can't see a difference... so i'm assuming the one with the specs is the male? I do realize that they're still young.... approximetly 3" in size... so I can't wait to see how they will transform!

for the fry you can try a few different things. if its an established tank they should be able to pick off any minute stuff floating around. you can try the powder stuff prolly best to use a turkey baster with that so its more effective. can go with brine shrimp or just crush some flak ein the palm of your hand. there are alot of options but honestly cant say which is the best in this situation. ive never had JDs but watching you enjoy them so much im pretty tempted lol.
