I would like to know...And i am willing to sacrafice platties and angels.. with what can go with my 3 juvinile Firemouths in my 55 gallon... heavily rocked fish tank. a.k.a...lots of hiding places. Can I do severums or not? Can i do acaras or not? Can i do Jewel Cichlids or not? I want specific advice on what works, in general with Firemouths. Also dont put a fish on here that is hard to find or can only be ordered off the internet. No $$$$$ for that! Thank you!

I have that exact same situation with my 55 gallon. I hope to put some Jewels in there. So I would go with some Jewels or maybe severums.

So Mitcheese... is it working? are there any territorial issues with them? and at what approximate age are your fish.. juvies.. adults...? What is your set up? Anyone else have any input?

Although severums and firemouths should get alone OK, I would not recommend them together in a 55g tank. Severums will get big and cause problems due to crowding.

Personally I'd go for either blue acaras or more firemouths. You might be able to find T-bar cichlids...a pair of these would also work with the firemouths. I'd definitely move the angels out of the tank, but the platys should be fine. In fact the firemouths should feel more comfortable in the tank with the platys in there.

Any of those fish should work just fine. I currently have a planted 75-gal. I started with 2 Firemouths, 2 Angles, 4 Severums, 1 Acara, 2 Kribs and several cories, platies, barbs and plecos. They all do fine together, though the angles ate my Neon Tetras. The Firemouths and Kribs breed regularly and though I have tried, I cannot catch all the firemouth juvies. There must be 15 still in there. The Krib fry I got while they were younger, and got them all out. The Angles have layed eggs, but ate them.

Festivums aren't seen very often in lfs. I was lucky enough to find some not long ago, but unfortunately they didn't survive the combo ich/fungus outbreak

The profile here says they get to 3.5", I've seen other sites that say they get to 6". I found them to be quite peaceful fish, that tend to stay in the middle-top portion of the tank.

To me they resemble a cross between an angel and a gourami. I thought they were nice fish and would love to find them around here again.

I wouldn't put Severums or Festivums with Firemouths. Both require soft, acidic water. Also, Severums have been known to reach up to 1' in length, also x2 Firemouths might nip the fins of the Festivum. However, a pair of Convicts or a small Jack Dempsey might work.
