How long is too long between meals for a 6" Oscar? I'll be out of town over the holidays for about 5-6 days and I'm hoping this is not too long. I don't really want to stock the tank with feeders before I go because it'll create a huge mess (plus he'd probably just eat them all on the first day).

Any thoughts on this?

Dont buy those vacation feeder blocks. They are primarily plaster of paris, and from what I have heard, will cause a worse mess than the feeder fish.
Really, for 5-6 days, your oscar would be just fine without food. Fish can go for 10-12 days without food.
If you truly want him to be fed, buy an automatic feeder. Walmart sells them for 14.99 canadian, around 10.99-11.99 american approx. I am not sure if this is a good brand, but im sure it would be reliable enough for 5-6 days. Make sure you run it for a day before you go to make sure it works right.

I don't know if the little auto feeder from WalMart will be that great for your fish, dose he eat small flake or mini pellets because that is all you can put in it, if your oscar eats that kind of food go for it cause they work great

The difference between 'involvement' and 'commitment' is like an bacon and egg breakfast: the chicken was 'involved' - the pig was 'committed'."

i just got back from my 9 day trip and my oscar was fine, although very happy to see me. he was still very active though.

i have left him for several trips around that long. once i left for 15 days and set up an auto feeder and he jumped and knocked it off before i got back. lucky he didn't make it out of the tank.

he'll be fine for that long. only buy an auto feeder if you will be gone for a very long time, like two weeks plus, and if you can find a way to set it up without having a big opening in the tank.
