Well, it's time for another fake poll. I've been asked to post this poll to help settle an argument. Is it okay to keep two, or even one oscar in a 50 gallon tank? Will they/it be happy in there, or will they/it get 'squeezed' by the tank's limited dimensions?

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Since many 50 gallons are three feet long, and an oscar will reach over a third of the length of the tank...then no.

As an owner of 2 Oscars, i'd have to say NO. A potentially 30cm(1') fish in a 30cm wide by 90cm long tank... not in my world. As much as some people don't like Oscars, its cruel to do this to any fish. If you want Oscars, get a 70G or bigger, and make surre the tank is ATLEAST 1.5' (45cm) wide.

PS: Whats the go with hating Oscars, other than they are common? Yep, they are messy, but most large Cichlids are. My guys are quite friendly, and let me pat them before and after feeding... so it's certainly not a temprament thing. Each to their own... but i can't say i've ever seen a living creature to go "ewwwwww" at other than human beings.

oscars can reach 14" in the aquarium (if they arent stunted by keeping them in a small tank like a 50) id suggest at least a 75 for a single/pair oscars. 50-55 gallons r really only suitable for 8" or smaller fish imo.

Yes!

I agree with what's been posted so far, and was actually going to say almost word for word what Riftlake Kid said.

When I first saw this thread, I thought you were thinking of keeping one in there yourself. (Now I feel better knowing that it's a fake poll). I guess you could start a juvenile Oscar out in a 50 gallon tank, but ONLY if you (seriously) planned on upgrading to something larger in the very near future.

I owned a tiger oscar and had to give him up because my 60 gallon was to small for him when he got bigger. So no to the oscar in the 50.

a 90g tank is fine for a pair of adult oscars and maybe a pleco. that is the least i would put them in. i prefer the 90 to the 75 cause it gives them 3" extra headroom. humans like space above their heads, so i can't see why oscars wouldn't.
