I know you guys must be pretty bored with oscar questions so feel free to be brief.
I have a 3 year old oscar about 8 inches long, seeming healthy in a 48''x12''x18'' tank with heavy internal filtration, limited lighting and a 12'' sailfin plec, a small peice of bogwood and a bit of slate, + pea gravel substrate.
I feed the catfish algae wafers and some vegetables and the oscar gets cichlid sticks, cichlid 'gold' pellets, chopped peeled prawns, frozen cockles, frozen bloodowrm and will soon be getting chopped washed earthworms as soon as the worm farm i have built starts producing.
Basically the problemis that he doesn't seem very happy. he doesn't eat with any enthusiam and even after long periods of starvation (36hrs) wont readily take any of the food i offer. he doesn't eat form the floor of the tank anymore and i'm always having to net out food i given him, despite cutting his rations to ensure Im not over feeding. The water params are all next to nothing as I make regular water changes and the temp is about 22degree C.
I think maybe he needs more stimulation, the tank is pretty bare and I have thought about getting a slightly younger oscar to keep him company, I know that there can be massive porblems with this but have got a lot of bogwood to add at the same time and hopefully de-terratorialise him.... if you think this will push too far the capacity of the tank (I know there are some real capacity nazis on this site) how about soem dither fish maybe 5 or six silver dollars or some pink tailed chalceus?
Am really just looking for advice to cheer him up and to create somethign abit more interesting with the tank.
thanks guys, and I was joking about the nazis (I know its not a good plan on internet forums!!). Bring it on.

nazis heheh. that tank is pretty stuffed. sailfin pleco can get to be about 18 inches and does nothing but eat and poop. the oscar will reach 12-14 inches itself and perfers to shred his food all over the tank. i would say that tank is done unless you upgraded to a 125g.

you could try adding some fake plants maybe some sort of cave. oscars have this issue with plant life being planted. just doesnt look right if its not floating lol. it will atleast give him something to do.
