My boyfriend has 7 fish, 6 cichlids and a catfish...Out of no where, 3 of his cichlids started harassing the others. One has died recentely...there is another barely living. They attack it until they can't swim and then nip at it. Does anyone have any suggestions? This is a recent development and he's had them for almost 4 months. I told him to get more plants and caves for hiding places...but I'm so concerned! PLEASE HELP!

How big is the tank and what kind of cichlids? Are the three doing the damage the same? How big are the fish?

Mike

In the short term I'd put in a divider or move fish to another tank.

The fish are only an inch, not even. The three gang up on one of them at the same time. This is in a 50g tank. They just attack!

The three that gang up are a Rusty, one of those blue with stripes...but NOT a blue zebra....and an orange one (sorry that's as scientific as I get)

Sounds as if it may be possible territorial disputes. Do the cichlids seem to be attacking the others close to any caves or hidding spots? If so,he will certainly want to add more in order to divide the territory up in the tank more evenly. Also chances are very good that in time that 50 gallon tank will become to small for 6 cichlids depending on what type they are.

Just remember in doing so you will need to rearrange all the caves and hiding spots in the tank.
