Can a pair of g.b.rams and platies be tankmates in a 30g (36" tank? It would be 1 male and 3 female platies plus maybe a lyretail, swordtail (they usually dont breed right?).

Yes, those kinds of fishes will be compatible. The rams might be territorial at breeding time, though.

I agree they should be fine but the pair will take over the tank when they breed.

As the Rams tend to stay near the bottom, and the Platies favor the upper areas, I don't think you'll have problems, even if they breed.

I agree with joe fishy. Rams tend to almost always stay near the bottom. Blue Rams would be fine with platy's, even if they do breed What is your pH? Blue Rams are a very sensative fish.

As mentioned above, Rams are mid/bottom dwelling and should be fine until they breed. Personally I'd not bother with the lyretail as its fins may be too much of an opportunity for the rams to miss. Swords and platies will inter-breed quite freely but with the others in there, I'm not sure many/any fry would survive anyway.

Thanks for the replies everyone!

This is going to be a planted tank with ecocomplete substrate with plenty of caves and such as well. Any bottom dwellers? Bristlenose plec or ottos?

It is really a matter of personal choice there... If you did get ottos instead of the bristlenose, you would need 3 or so. The problem with ottos is that they can be very delicate for the first month or so after they've been added to a new tank. I would get the bristlenose, because they look so funny, and wouldn't be bothered if the rams decided to get nasty during breeding time.

You have the space for some bottom dwellers; are you just looking for some more activity? If so, the Cories (about 6 Pepper or Bronze) would do nicely. If you're trying to breed the Rams, I'd say no. The Rams would get fiesty during breeding with any bottom dwellers, and the eggs would likely get eaten. As Blue Rams are fairly hard to breed, and I'm assuming you're going for a nice community tank, then go with the Cories.

I don't agree on every aspect here. Mollies prefer a neutral to alkaline pH, and Rams prefer acidic. Since both species can be very delicate, they nay not all survive if kept at pH levels not ideal to their needs. Mollies are not supposed to be kept in tanks with driftwood because of the acidity it adds to the water. So personally, I would have to say no, but each to their own, you can try it if you wish.

Thanks, but I was asking about platies.

Will rams keep the platy fry population down?

I should think that they would help in that aspect.

I keep ram with platies, no problems at all. At one point there were cories in the tank, now there is a BN and loaches. The rams don't bother any of the other fish.

My platies seem to do a good job of keeping the fry population down although I'm sure the rams help as well

What made you take the cories out? Was the ram not getting along with them?
