I have an oscar about 6 months old, and 7-8 inches long. When I got him I got it with a mate, but the mate died in the first two weeks and I was too heart broken to get another one. Now I think my oscar is lonely. Can I get another one and put with him, or will he just eat it? The biggest ones I have seen for sale are about 3 inches long. Nothing in the tank with him except 2 loaches. I love him ALOT, and he is the only fish I have ever pet, 2 would be nice, but can I ?

How big is the tank. Oscars can be very hard to pair off.

to actually get a breeding pair it's best to get 6-8 juveniles and let a pair form. bettacris, your odds are very low of getting a pair with only 3.

as for rena-waits, with your oscar already being 7-8" long it has already reached maturity therefore adding new tankmates of any kind will be difficult. adding another oscar may prove to be impossible, especially if yours is a male. the best way to try and add another oscar would be to get around 6 of the 3" oscars you saw and see if your larger oscar is accepting of one of the smaller ones or the larger oscar may even pair up with one of the smaller ones. however, it's also quite possibly your large oscar could just kill or eat all the smaller ones then you'd be out all that money. Also, should none of them prove to be compatible, you'd have a hard time trying to get rid of the 6 smaller oscars without losing quite a bit of money.
