The safest is to use something in the tank that will keep calcium in the water, thereby buffering the pH - a crushed coral substrate or crushed coral in the filter are the usual methods. Not as safe but sometimes the only option for areas that have naturally acidic and soft water is baking soda and sometimes other ingredients (like salt and epsom salts). For Tanganyikan tanks, iodized salt can be used.
