It was me who hadn't seen a bolivian ram male with a dorsal fin filament...but then again, I don't know anyone else locally keeping them. Mine still doesn't have one despite being in my tank over a year and a half - I wonder if there may be some variation based upon location the stock came from.

Well, it has very long flowing tail fin filaments, is much bigger than the female in the tank with no filaments on any fins, and they regularly have fry. With no other bolivian rams in the tank, just the two, one has to be male and the one with filaments and size seems like the logical choice!

My digital camera doesn't have a macro mode, so here's the best picture I have of him:

I've also wondered whether the filaments are a variation.

I have two Bolivian Rams, which both have long dorsal and tail filaments. But one appears to be female (pink belly, larger, rounder size). And the other appears to be male (orange belly, slimmer size). Unfortunately, they don't show a lot of interest in each other. So, they could be males... :%)
