Hi People

My friend wants to give me a pictus cat, in my opinion he would do fine with an oscar the oscar is only about 3-4" and the cat is about 5" i think that even when the oscar is fully grown they will still get along? what do you think? they'd be in a 77gallon by the way.

It may be fine with an oscar for the time being, but a fully grown oscar may well feel the need to beat up the catfish. Pictus catfish stay comparatively small, so an oscar that felt compelled to hurt the catfish would easily be able to do so. I personally wouldn't mix the two, just because of the size difference.

Pictus are very fast, and schooling, they need hideing spaces as well. I have a feeling that if the tank were set up in a way to give them plenty of space to roam the bottom of the tank with hideing spots the oscar couldn't get to (driftwood tangles and rock caves and such) you may do alright with a small school of 3-4. I've never had an oscar so can't say how fast they are, but pictus are quite fast . Make sure you purchase pictus safe fish nets if you do get them...not the green mesh ones as they will get caught in them.

I would agree with babelfish in about everything she said, including them getting tangled in nets. Also, I'll add that I would feel comfortable putting pictus cats with oscars because pictus cats can defend themselves if they need to. The same barbs that like to get tangled into nets can also be used as effective weapons, and well, thats why I took mine back to the fish store...

Just letting you know, I had a friend who had a pictus in with an Oscar, until the oscar decided to take a bite out of it. Let's just say he won't be mixing them again.
