It does look like a yellow lab. Not a great picture though. Anything small enough to fit in most fishes mouths are going to get eaten. It probably didnt eat the pleco as its an armored catfish. Just look around the tank really good for bones.

I'm 80% sure it's a labidochromis caeruleus........ But the head looks more pointy than normal..... Possibly a stunted labidochromis caeruleus.

After speaking with Kris on MSN he has told me it's actually 12-13inches.(the number 1 wasn't working)
He has also told me it's very aggresive.

With that info I think it's too big and aggresive to be a Electric Yellow.

He's currently keeping it in a 125g.

Any ideas what it could be.......???????

The fish is actually thirteen inches in length the biggest i have seen of any breed close to the yellow tab . thats why i need advice on what it is. there is a slight problem i caught the fish in the caribean and the yellow tab lives in africa! or originates form africa. so any advice on breed and sex of the fish would be very appreciated. and by the way i saw it devour the leopard pleco when it was only 7 inches which was a shock. thanks to everyobne who helps

Met a new member in chat this morning, KrisClayton. He has a cichlid thats been going through neon tetras like bloodworms, and I think he managed to eat a pleco too. He's only about 3 inches now, and has blue on top of his fins. At first my thoughts were Electric Yellow or Yellow Lab, but it doesn't really look like this. I'm posting the picture for him because he can't do it. Please ID.

We've already established that... *points to miss monkeypants*. He claimed a better picture would be posted... No such luck...... I guess the mystery of the african cichlid that made it across africa to a reef, mated with a very large compatible marine species and somehow managed to be cought, transported and made to live in fresh water for 5 years will never be solved... Alas... How will I sleep at night.

Honestly, I think this guy is just putting a prank on you guys.

If he caught it from the caribbean, odds are he would have had to have a license. If he did, he wouldnt be able to catch or keep fish and import it without knowing the species.

Also, odds are the fish would have died from shocked if you put it in FW if it has been in SW.

Sorta reminds me of the guy that said his clown loaches were breeding..

It was caught in the Caribbean and now it's being kept in freshwater? This is a weird situation all around ....

Well it kind of looks like my electric yellows thou the 13 inch size is really shocking. Mine never got over about 5 to 6 inches. Secondly were you trying to keep the neons and this cichlid together as they are certainly not compatible.

how can you say "He's only about 3 inches now," and actually mean 13inches?!? 13inches is a PRETTY BIG fish and not ONLY ABOUT....

I think there's obviously a misunderstanding here...

Couple things I wanted to ask.

Do you mean 12-13 CENTEMETERS? or Inches. There is a large difference.
Also, no, it is not a Red Zebra Cichlid. Looks nothing like one at all.

What is that in the backround, because it looks a bit like an oscar, that fish does not look a foot long with, the thing behind it does though, I think that most definatly is a yellow lab and a male one at that, onle males get black on their bottom fins, where as females only get it on their dorsal. My friend keeps them, and that looks identical to it.

Thanks for everyone who has helped with this what i call painstakeing search.
i keep getting differet species names coming through but it eventually looks like a hybrid species mixed with a yellow tab and a salt water version of a reletive of it some kind. there is no other possibility that a fresh water fish could survive in salt water it would have to be a hybrid. once again thanks to everyone. kris

That is a Red Zebra Cichlid. It gets about 5 inches and is aggresive. I have my Dr. Fosters and Smith catalog and i found it in the back where you can order fish. Hope this helps

DEFINITELY need a better picture than that. Otherwise we'll have to say it's just a mutant electric yellow.
