my male and female pair bred earlier yesterday morning and the female had a mouth FULL of eggs. Later that night, i came home and she was no longer holding eggs in her mouth. Could it be that she rejected them? or that she ate them herself? Both fish are still quite young and small, only about 2 1/2 inches each, and so could it be that they're both still inexperiences parents? any help would be greatly appreciated.

This is not uncommon if it is the first time your female has been holding. Often times they (first-time holding females) will either spit out their eggs or swallow them within the first couple of weeks. It seems it takes a few attempts for mouthbrooder females to "get the hang" of holding and to carry their fry full term.

*nods in agreement* I had the same thing happen recently. Two of my female hongis were holding at the same time (the big male had been busy!), both of them swallowed their eggs after a week or two. Once they breed the first time though, they will do it again and again, and eventually the girls will learn to hold on properly. So keep an eye out, I'll bet you have another batch on the way quite soon!

i'm glad i'm not the only one having problems with cichlids being *bad* parents

it'd be nice if they bred but i'm not too impatient about them doing so. thanks for the replies.
