Budzilla Enthusiast Posts: 288 Kudos: 197 Votes: 90 Registered: 18-Jul-2006 | Well I have only had this pair for a month, and now they have spawned, i am so excited, there are eggs all over a rock that they are guarding. Here is a picture of the spawning site: http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k82/budzilla_2006/full.jpg Here is a close up picture: http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k82/budzilla_2006/closeup.jpg Here is the male tending to the eggs: http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k82/budzilla_2006/DSCN0720.jpg How long does it take for them to hatch? I have already taken all potential egg or fry eaters out of the ten gallon. The only other fish in ther now are a trio of ottos. -Vincent |

Budzilla Enthusiast Posts: 288 Kudos: 197 Votes: 90 Registered: 18-Jul-2006 | Well I checked right when I woke up and the eggs are still on the rock with male hovering over head. The female is pretty much on break, but she comes to say hi every once in a while. I already have some small fry food, the stuff that you buy in a tube. There is a picture of the female on the thread in the photobooth called, my tanks(now with more pics and a video). I don't think the ottos will eat the fry so I think I am fine on the point of not having any predators. -Vincent |

Budzilla Enthusiast Posts: 288 Kudos: 197 Votes: 90 Registered: 18-Jul-2006 | well I am not exactly sure what happened? while at school they dug to holes and, the egss were gone. They seem to be swimming around like they normally do. do you think that the fry are in the holes? Its hard to tell between the plants. -Vincent |

Theresa_M Moderator Queen of Zoom Posts: 3649 Kudos: 4280 Votes: 790 Registered: 04-Jan-2004 | That's why they dig the pits, but if it's their first spawn there's a chance they may have eaten them. ~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is water at the bottom of the ocean |

carpe_diem Fish Addict *Dreamer* Posts: 555 Kudos: 292 Votes: 51 Registered: 18-Apr-2004 | if the parents arent protecting the hole then they have eaten them. if successful parents will hover over the hole and protect it. better luck next time.. as ive learnt its touch and go when these lil guys breed. mine have had several attempts with no luck! keep us updated! |

sham Ultimate Fish Guru Posts: 3369 Kudos: 2782 Votes: 98 Registered: 21-Apr-2004 | They'll lay again in a few weeks depending some on how well you feed them, how old they are, and other conditions. What filter do you have on the tank? If you are using anything stronger than a sponge filter the fry could also have hatched, started wiggling off the ground, and gotten sucked into the filter. It is hard though for new ram parents to resist eating the fry when they start wiggling around and looking like food. It might take a couple tries for them to figure it out. |

Budzilla Enthusiast Posts: 288 Kudos: 197 Votes: 90 Registered: 18-Jul-2006 | I have a topfin 10 filter but the intake is covered by a styrofoam background and a mass of riccia. I don't think they ever hatched in the first place though. -Vincent |

Budzilla Enthusiast Posts: 288 Kudos: 197 Votes: 90 Registered: 18-Jul-2006 | They have now laid eggs again and are guarding them. It looks the exact same on the same rock so there isn't anything to take pictures of. I wonder how the second attempt will go. -Vincent |

Budzilla Enthusiast Posts: 288 Kudos: 197 Votes: 90 Registered: 18-Jul-2006 | I think it because when I set up my tanks I do my best to mimic what they would naturally live in. I'll post my pulcher fry pics now since I put it off, just hard to get pics of such small fish. -Vincent |
