Male adult rams are usually more colorful and I believe have a longer dorsal fin.

How can you not know what type of ram you have? They aren't that difficult to tell apart, you know. Or, just take a picture and show us. We'll help you there.

The two ram cichlids are each sexed differently, so I'll tell you how to determine the gender of each type. Keep in mind, this doesn't always work with young fish, because they have not grown enough to exhibit their sexual dimorphism.

German rams are easier to sex than Bolivians are. Male Germans have a "spike" at the front of their dorsal fin, the second and third rays are longer than the rest. Females lack this trait, and also have more pink on their bellies than males do.

Bolivian rams are a little more difficult to sex, and juvenile fish are much tougher to sex. Adult male Bolivians tend to be more colorful than females, and have little filament-like threads on their dorsal and caudal fins.

And when he gets to Heaven, to Saint Peter he will tell: "One more Marine reporting, Sir! I've served my time in Hell."

Rams are really hard to sex due to selective breeding and stuff, for example depending on where they came from you could have females that are bred to be just as colorful as males, or you could get just a really dull male if you have a wild one or an early generation....

I have 3 blue (german) rams and I still havent been able to sex them after months... I'm guessing these are what you have because they are more popular and increasingly so...

The most reliable method, i have been informed, is the shape of the dorsal fin, whether it is rounded (female) at the back (near the tail) or if there is a long point(male), or by the first 3 rays of the dorsal fin being extended on the males... This is still pretty difficult because, like one of mine, many of them have sort of rounded sort of pointed in-between looking fins, or sort of extended rays...

Some people say that only the females have a reddish/pink spot on their bellys, but I have one definite male that also has a pink spot so I think thats pretty unreliable...

so uhhh..... good luck!
