I've heard that corys and rams may not be a good idea as if the males are spawning and getting over-territorial they may attack the corys and or tear out their eyes.

Live plants will be just fine. My Bolivian rams live in a jumbled assortment of plants, and don't pay them any heed. Rams may possibly knock loose a weakly-rooted plant if they crash into it on accident, but at wouldn't happen often. Rams really won't damage plants at all. In fact, live plants are recommended for both species of rams because they seem to make the fish feel at home.

I much prefer Bolivian to Germans. I will be getting some for my 55 Gallon Tank as soon as I finally get to move, and set it up. You should look at Tetratech's tank log. He has a pair of bolivians in his tank and they are awesome!

Definitely go with Bolivians and a good sized school of Cories. That will do well in your tank. You should do a log on it so that everyone can see what your tank looks like!
Good Luck with your tank. I hope it does well!

i have the bolivian rams with panda cories and juli cories. They live fine together and the ram doesn't even notice the cories.

Whichever species of ram you choose should be fine with Corydoras catfish. I have kept my assorted cories with both German and Bolivian rams, and there have been no notable issues. I think that adding the catfish before the rams would help to deter any territorial behavior towards the cories, as the rams would not be inclined to view them as intruders. Either way though, they will most likely get along together.
Breeding rams may work to drive off Corydoras which get too close to their nesting site, but rarely cause much damage.

Hi there,
I personally prefer the Bolivian Rams.
Mature adults are amazing in coloration.
They have amazing personalities and super
dynamic social behaviour.
I have 5, 2 males and 3 females in my 75g tank.
There are also 7 corys in the tank.
They get along fine.
I would very highly recommend Bolivian Rams.

That is an overexagoration. Rams do not get THAT agressive. They may nip at cory's, though I have never heard of them ripping their eyes out.

I also keep Rams with cory's and the Rams recently had there first spawn and I still have all 10 of my cory's...and they all still have both of their eyes.

I'm looking to get some rams for my 20 gal ( 20 lbs of sand, rock caves and a little bit of java moss) I know there are two types , and i was wondering what you would reccomend, I like livley, colorfull fish. Also if anyone has much experience with them id like to know how hard they are to maintain. Will territory be an issue in a 20 gal? and how many can i keep? thanks so much.

Sand is actually better for them because they like to dig. Rounded pebbles work too because they like to mouth the substrate. I keep mine with sand and there is no obvious problem.

Rams are quite nice & clolurful fish, but don't overstock the tank, as they will fight for territory. Try to get a pair & hopefully you'll see some fry.

personally, I LOVE the bolivian Ram. By far my favorite ram. The german ram, ive heard, is harder to take care of then the bolivian.

The bolivians are gorgeous.

Blue Rams do stay small, but require a lot of space for territory. I have 4 Blue Rams in my 55 gallon tank and they fight like crazy, I can't imagine having more than a pair in a 20 gallon.

I would probably say 2 Rams, 6 Cory's and maybe a small school of tetras...depends if you want to raise fry or not.

If you do go with blue rams take your time acclimating them...they can be pretty uncomfortable with change so go slowly.

I think German (Blue) Rams are more colorful than Bolivians. I have one female in my 55g and she has colored up quite nicely. I don't know about territory in a 20g. I think as long as you get a male and a female, if you are planning on getting 2, then it should be fine. There would only be a territory problem if you got 2 males. As long as there are hiding places and such, you should be fine.
My girl swims with the tetras sometimes, and other times keeps to herself. A very beautiful fish.:%)
