My Red Faced Midas' are breeding with my red barred midas.
I don't like hybrids, and for some reason they just won't
mate with their like kinds?....

Hi Im a new member but not new to the hobby and I have some midas cichlids as well. One thing you could do is if you have any other chlids is use the baby hybrids as feeders and feed them to your other fish. This will be of one benifit to you and you fish would love it. Also the best way to find fish that will pair up is to get a male and about 6 or 8 females and soon you will get a pair that will be pure breed. Hope this was some help.

Thanks for the info...but, I've been raising and breeding Amphilophus for about 40 years now....LOL....even though I know an awful lot about cichlids, I do learn something new daily. In 1966 I bought this fire engine red fish at a pet shop. It had huge black lips and black trim around the fins. The pet shop owner had it in a TV converted to an
aquarium. Said he got it from a guy from Costa rica....they called it a Diablo Roja...He said I could have it if I promised not to bring it back as he'd sold it about 3 times and it was too mean so they always brought him back. Back then they were called Cichlasoma Erythreum (sp?)....I have about 30 very large Amphilophus now, Dovii, Umbies, Red Faced Costa Ricans, Red barred midas, Tetracanthus (cuban), Butticoferi, Amarillo, Hoogaboomerus, Striped Labiatums, Chancho and a few other things....I've always fed the fry to the others when they're hybrids with the exception of my Red Faced Costa Ricans and Red Barred Midas crosses which I've kept as they're so beautiful....

That is all so cool thanks for sharing that. I would love to have this many of these same fish but not enough room. you have been doing this longer than me then and know more im sure. I look foward to learning from you some tips and things about these awesome fish. So How do you keep so many you must have many many tanks or 1000 plus size tank?
