They dont actually need it ... just add normal aquarium salt, 1 teaspoon per 10 gallons. That helps keep stress down.

tommy, it also depends on the starting chemistry of your water, and what the fish have been used to so far.

My water in their tank is as follows ph 8.0 ammonia 0 nitrite 0 nitrAte 10 ppm. It has been like this for about a week before these guys arrived. I don't know what the water was were they came from, except for the P.H. which was at 8.0, or so I was told.
I am useing 2, penguin 400 with bio-wheel both seeded in other tanks, a fluval 404 and a clone eheim I won on ebay.
But just today I noticed an odour coming from the tank.
Double check the water, reading are the same, I am a little worried. Maybe I should post in water quality, I will keep an eye overnite, if still the same tomorrow I will post.
Thanks
Tom.

the ph sounds fine, more than likely your water is quite hard with that ph too.

Tommy's water, straight out of the tap, is almost a dead-ringer for Lake Malawi water, and not so far off from Tanganyika's..it should be just fine.

That's right, my tap water has a p.h. of 7.9-8.0 Just perfect for cichlids.
I was curious about salt as a water control, but the odour I mentioned has subsided.

How old's the carbon? You might want to add/change some if it's too old. You also might want to do a water change, that'll probably help.

One thing to remember about salt in the aquarium: As the water evaporates...the salt stays. Top-off water should not have any salt in it.
