Im most likely going to make my 180g setup into an african tank. There is one thing that i am still not sure of, how much salt is needed for africans? Is it just a bonus for them or is it a necessitity? Also, does anyone have driftwood in with their africans? I love the look but i know it would lower the PH, but im thinking if i have enough rock and aragonite, then some wood wouldnt do much. Thanks

You could probably balance it out. Properly treated drift wood (soaked or boiled) will only alter your pH by .1 or .2 typically. Most africans can live in anywhere from 7.5-8.2. My lfs keep ALL their cichlids at about 7.0.

I don't know which africans you want, but I personally sometimes like to stick to what would closely look like their natural habitat.

Edit: Opps, I've never used salt for my africans and I've never had a single problem with them at all.

I would say if you introduce it slowly enough you would be fine. With as much water as you have I doubt fairly big pieces will have that much of an effect on it. I'm not 100% though.

Im currently using driftwood with my africans, and the pH is good at 7.8.

I add tons of shells and abalone shells that helped me raise the pH (originally it was 6.2)

Theres always buffers and such.

Salt isnt really needed, but it just helps relieve stress and all the doo dads people say it does.

Well my 29g "holding" tank was setup for SA cichlids but i just made a trip to my LFS and i am going to set it up to hold some africans that i will later transplant to the 180g once i get it setup. I got some crushed coral, some rock (they were out of texas holey, but this rock has holes and crevices like holey does, i think its called golden lace or something) and some PH buffer just incase i cant raise it naturally.
