Curious and frustrated...I've been trying to get info on Salvini, books and online. I've read max size anywhere from 4" up to 10"; temperament peaceful to very agressive.

Can anyone with personal Salvini experience give me some info?

when i was looking for salvini info i had to search hard too.
they can reach 7" and are VERY VERY aggressive. ive heard cases of them bullying larger red devils. ive seen tanks where they had bitten the eyes out of each other. these r one of the most aggressive cichlids. but one of the few aggressive CA's i like cause they r so beautiful.

Yes they are quite aggressive in the sence that you are more likly to find a super aggressive one then a peacful one. They grow to around for males 6-8 inches females slightly smaller 8 is pushing it but more likely to be 6. i have two in seperate tanks one male one female. You can tell the diference by the marking on the dorsal fin at around 1.5 inches.

My personal experience is that they are little trouble makers always looking for a fight not like other fish that only fight back this fish stirs the pot. There not stupid either myn always fights with my synspilum around 5 times his size and he gets chased away every time only to come bake and bight him while hes not looking swiming away.

If you get one i suspect that he or even she as females are just as aggressive will be the source of all your problems aggression wise so dont get more than one. this sed their not as aggressive as made out before no way a devil would back down to a six inch fish. But i would call them extreemly stubourn. stubourn as a mule dag-namit

Hi,

I introduced a 2" female salvini in a tank that has my female loisellei. It only lasted a week. The salvini would not stop starting fights. I ended up giving her to my cousin who put her in a tank with Jags and Flowerhorns, and to my suprise she is hanging with them. IMO a real aggressive fish. I agree, they are trouble makers.

I have had them that have been very good fish with lots of color, however the last ones I purchased from Jeff Rapps have been very aggressive, however still very pretty fish. They even fight with the Red Terrors in a 125 u.s. gal tank, I will eventually have to separate them! It is trully a gamble with them.
