Ok so here is once again another try for my 55 Gal. I have a pair of convicts tha are about 3 years old. They tend to be pretty mellow for the most part. The LFS told me I could posibly try Severums. What do people think? Sorry I have been asking so many questions about what can hang with my covicts for thoughs of you that read stuff from me. It just doesn't seem like there are a lot of options for Americans in a 55 Gal with my Cons. Thanks for your time!

When you say pair, is it a breeding pair?

If so, how big is the male?

Are they the only fish in the tank at present?

Only way I'd add a severum is if its bigger in size, otherwise it would get bullied by the Cons. A few tall plants to break up the territory, and lots of hiding spots would help. Although I don't know if severums are open swimmers or prefer caves.

Ok so here is my tank list of fish.......

Male Convict 5"
Female Con 2 1/2 to 3" maybe
4 Giant Danios
2 B. Rainbows
1 Synodrumis (sp) Cat
1 Pleco
1 Rainbow Shark

The pair of covicts have tryed to bread a few times but has been controled by my pleco who seems to own the tank when he wants it.

Around July or Aug. I plan on moving my Rainbows, Giant Danios and posibly my shark to a new tank. So what I am looking at is getting something in a month or so from now.

any new cichlid additions are going to have a really tough time with that male convict. if you want to add anything else, you'll most likely have to move out either the female or male convict. the breeding pair with the size they already have will have no problem killing any new cichlid that they don't want in their territory...which at this point is the entire tank I'm sure.

They have a territory set at one end of the tank although they seem to move around the whole tank. Might it be best to wait until I have to take the tank down and reset it up to add a new Cichlid? That way terriory can be established new instead of existing?

Moving the tank decorations around won't help the situation much. Basically, there's very few fish you can house with a breeding pair of convicts, and a Severum isn't one of them. The convicts will become very aggressive when they do spawn, and will kill everything else in the tank.

I'd suggest keeping the pair together in a tank to themselves. Or, return one and keep the remaining one with a Severum. I have 3 Severums in a tank with a convict, and they get along well enough.
