my firemouths and other Thorichthys have never bothered plants...live or fake. I have 3 T. helleri in a planted 20 long till the helleri need to go in a bigger tank. The platys nip at the plants but I've never seen the helleri do it.

Okay, thanks!

My severums have also eaten my Amazon sword, as well as most of my java moss. I started giving them romaine lettuce every day, and that pretty much keeps them occupied.

Mine is peaceful, but still small, maybe 2" It lives with a blue acara, 2 angels, geophagus jurupari, plec, odessa barbs. Hopefully because it will be 'growing up' with these other fish it will remain peaceful.

For the most part. I had four Severums, One was really cranky and he went away. The three I'm left with don't bother anyone.

Mike

ps. Gold Severums are really cool.

At the store where I work, we have a large display of two green severums, 8 to 10 Geophagus pelingrini, 10 to 15 silver dollars, 3 Parrot Cichlids, 40 or so Red Serpae Tetras, and 30 or so Columbian Blue Tetras. The Severums leave everything alone just fine.

So in short, yes severums are peaceful, expecially for their size.

We have a green severum in a cichlid community tank and he has attitude so I wouldn't put our guy into the peaceful category, BUT I wouldn't call him nasty either. He just makes himself known. Personally, I would only keep fish that can look after themselves in with a severum

Depends on the Tetra species, the bigger, the safer

What size tank is the severum going into? they can get rather large and do need a decent tank

When I had mine he was very good with other fish, but with my acaras it was all out war. This was in a 75g tank too. The neon is probably at risk, if you get one just sell the neon to the lfs.

I think that with the Severums (and with several other cichlids of that size) they seem to have the biggest problem with fish that are around the same size or slightly larger because they see them as a threat to their place in the tank, smaller fish are mostly left alone. That is unless they are a true predator or not fed enough

I have three Green Severums kept with a Convict, two Bolivian Rams, and two adult gouramis (pink kisser and opaline) in a 75 gallon. And while the severums are pretty catty with each other (they're all females), they completely ignore the other fish.

Thanks for the information. I really want to get one but right now I am dealing with an ich problem. Once I get my tank back together I will look into getting a baby. I saw some baby blue ones at the lsf.

You know Theresa I was thinking the same thing if I get the severums small and young enough then maybe he will stay peaceful and get along with everyone else. What size tank do you have????

My severum and friends are in my 75g. The largest fish in there right now is the acara at approx 5", so it looks kind of empty with all these young fish.

You sound like you've made up your mind already but if you have any doubts..I say get a severum or two! I think they are great fish, mine is about 8 inches long now and he is very intelligent, probably the smartest fish I have ever seen. He will eat out of my hand, he sits on one side of the tank and watches me when I'm in my room, and he is very knowledgable about what the other fish are doing. He only pushes around the fish he knows are the rowdy ones that cause trouble and leaves the more peaceful fish alone. Just like others have said, though, if you have fish small enough to be eaten, beware...I know from experience...

Yes, I have made up my mind. I think I'm just going to move the smaller tetras to a smaller tank. Question, do they grow quickly?

I suppose that kind of depends on what you mean by quickly. In my experience, most fish go thru a growth spurt when purchased young/small and once they're settled in their new home.

Below are a couple pics of my severum. The first was taken early in January when it was purchased. At the time it was not quite 1" long and seemed to be all eyes. The second photo was taken this morning and I would say it's now ~2" long.

Thank you...or thank you from my severum

I'll have to get some recent pictures of that tank together and post either tonight or tomorrow. The tank was set up almost two months ago, some pics from that time are [link=here]http://www.fishprofiles.com/files/forums/Photo%20Booth/53551.html" style="COLOR: #99FFFF[/link]. After that we lost internet for a month so I guess it's time for an update

Theres my severum...a bit larger than the little guy on those other pictures, and he's even larger now. (those pics are old and he is bigger with a more rounded face now).

Edit: Hope the link works...it worked for me. Also, sorry for the blurred pictures (he hates having his picture taken) and the water marks (didn't see them until the picture was taken).
