I bought an angelfish yesterday and it needs a name. But first I need to know if it a girl or guy. Here is a picture:

My pictures are very blurry. I hope you can tell by this one. Its fins are a little ripped, I didn't notice this when I picked it out. Sorry for the bad picture quality. I took it very fast and couldn't get a good, clear shot.[/font]

Your angel appears to be female, who also needs some Melafix for those fins. Good luck with her !

How big is the angel. The best way to tell is the males will develop a hump on their head as they grow to almost full size.

Although my male has a definate nuchal hump, I've seen pairs where the male had none. I look to the area between the anal fin and the tail on the body. The female has a straightish line there, the male more curved.

Yes, the poor thing has badly ripped fins. I didn't notice those until I got it home. I just dosed melafix in my tank before I got the angel. I have carbon in my filter to get the remaining meds out. I hate using the stuff because you can only use it for 3 days and then you have to change the water and add the carbon. It also makes the water smell very strongly.
Do you think I could remove the carbon, add melafix for a few days, and then add the same carbon back in the filter? I don't have time to go back to the LFS to get more carbon and I just got the one I have in there now a week ago.

"Do you think I could remove the carbon, add melafix for a few days, and then add the same carbon back in the filter?"

Melafix treatment is 7 days, and can be repeated if necessary. Remove the carbon, do a 25% water change then start the treatment. After 7 days, do another 25% water change. Then either re-add your carbon, or replace with fresh. How long was the old carbon in the tank ?

High protein foods will also help her heal faster

a thing with the humps, from what i gathered, really older males will get them, and from a book it said when they get the humps they should be way old to breed.

but in theory that is a good way to tell. my friend who knows said something about the lower fin, and how if it is curved it is a ... and if it straight it is a ...

can't really remember how it went, next time i see him i will ask him for ya.

but like u already know, breeding is easy with groups so the chances of getting a male and a female inprove.

It's very difficult to see if it's a male or a female & you can never be 100% sure, unless you see them breeding.

Treat the Angel with Melafix for a few days & hopefully the fins will be much better soon.
