I choose 2 of these at my LFS, 1 was smaller with darker stripes and the other was larger and had lighter stripes.

This website offers no info on Bumblebee/Hornett Cichlids yet so I've been looking elsewhere and found this - http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_crabro.php

That page says that dominate/breeding males will change to totally black and when in breeding dress, they will have blue sparkles on their flanks...well, both of mine have shown blue sparkles on their upper and lower fins. I'm assuming that I have 2 males. My LFS said there is no problem exchanging one of the males to try and obtain a female...but exactly HOW do I choose a female at the store? I have been unable to find any articals on how to sex a female...

Thanks in advance for any and all assistance!

Overnight, one of the Bumblebee's dug out one of my caves so it now has a big pile of gravel in front of the cave. lol Is that typical behavior for a male cichlid?

Digging is typical for that species, male or female

The only sure way to sex them is to "vent" them...
Or you can wait til one changes color, to see if you have a male

Both have shown the blue fins so that leads me to believe that I have 2 males. What exactly is "venting" them?

In the absence of a male, females will assume the dominant role. Even so far as displaying male coloring... Not a sure fire way to sex them...

"Venting"

A fishes eggs/sperm are released from the vent.
It is located between the Anal fin and the anus.

In males it is comparable in size to the Anus...
In females it is larger than the Anus...

Venting is easier done with larger fish and takes a long time and many attempts to be successful.

Just be quick, net the fish, flip it over, and make your guess....Then release the fish.

Before you even try it, get a good light, and a magnifying glass.

But with your species they'll let you know over time. And I say wait...
Venting is usually more for the sexually monomorphic species
